“I want a fully integrated live/work building where I can run a
company, rebuild an engine, do a photo shoot and throw a dinner
party, without worrying about damaging the place.”
Given a steep site with dramatic views on the edge of an industrial
section of Ballard, PLACE researched, programmed, collaborated (with
Kevin Spence Architect and our consultants) and sketched to create
Diva, named for the 1983 Parisian thriller from which it derives
its spatial concepts. The design pared architecture to first
principles: provide shelter, comfort and joy in an efficient,
flexible structure that could last a hundred years. The material
palette was simple - industrial, but warm. Textured stucco contrasts
with steel and concrete, while clear finished fir and Cor Ten steel
complete the mix. By using durable structural materials as finished
surfaces, employing passive green strategies throughout, and
overlapping program to make the best use of every square foot, the
construction cost was kept in check and elegant, efficient functionality
prevail.
