Brought in to design a new home on a dramatic steep site for an
architect couple, PLACE understood its mission to facilitate
collaboration and good communication immediately. Working with the
clients and collaborating architect Kevin Spence, we
undertook an extensive analysis of the site and the owners’ dreams
for the house.
The result: a spacious, daylit house that tumbles
down the hillside, encompassing generous space for indoor and outdoor
cooking, entertaining, retreat, rest, and work. The patio serves
as entry and central outdoor space, linking garage/ guest house
with the main house and the landscape. Rainwater from the roof feeds
a pond which provides counterpoint to the outdoor fireplace, enhancing
the cool Northwest woodland experience of the site.
