Ralph Anderson was a pioneer of Northwest Modern architecture - and
one of his earliest houses was the Stanley Residence on Mercer
Island, Washington. It’s a beautiful house on a stunning site, and
the house won awards in 1958 when it was finished. 40 years later,
the house still worked and had been well cared-for, but some updates
were needed to fit a modern family’s needs. The “Saturday Room,”
our client’s idea, was an anchor: this space housed well hidden
laundry and storage space, the TV and games, and comfortable lounge
space. Beyond that, a new bath, renovated masters suite and closets
made possible by enclosing the carport, all open up to the beautiful
landscape and patio. Possibly the gem of the whole project is the
workshop and new garage, designed to mesh with the existing
architecture, with a modern sensibility. The 12:12 roof, built to
match that of the existing house, created magnificent space inside.
