In the early 20th century, a bold adventurer built a seaside cottage high on the cliffs of West Vancouver. It took commitment in those days: a long ride out Marine Drive and then about four storeys of stair climbing was required just to reach the cabin.
Ceramic artist Tam Irving lived here for years, and in 1973 added a modern pottery studio to the mix.
Years passed, and with them the structures took some damage, but in 2012 the dramatic oceanside setting captured the heart of our client. She brought our team together to restore the whole complex. The pottery studio maintains its boho charm and incredible connection to the land; and the cottage is completely reconstructed.
New patios and boardwalks reinforce the ties between the structures and the landscape. Airy, open spaces nestle into the cliffside forest canopy, looking out over the marina to the ocean. Easy connections from interiors to outdoors evokes memories of a beloved summer cottage, but with all new structure, Innotech windows and doors, and energy efficient construction, it’s cozy even when shore winds howl.
